Nights Out

A Driver for Dinner

Grand Case parking after seven is the reason this exists.

Why Grand Case, specifically

It is the best eating on the island by a clear margin, and it is not close.

The strip is a single narrow road along the bay, lined end to end with restaurants — proper French cooking, the lolos at one end doing grilled food on the roadside, and everything between. It is a place you walk down and choose, rather than a restaurant you go to.

It is also 35 minutes from the Dutch side, on roads that are unlit for parts of the way, at the end of an evening that will involve wine.

The parking problem

Grand Case has one road. Parking on it fills by about seven in season, and after that you are walking in from wherever you found a space, in the dark, in shoes chosen for dinner.

Being dropped at the door and collected from it is most of the value here. It sounds small. It is not.

The bridge, again

The Simpson Bay bridge opens in the evening as well as during the day, and being caught on the wrong side of it with a reservation in fifteen minutes is a bad start.

We work around the published openings. It is the single most common reason people are late for dinner here.

Somewhere closer

Not every evening needs to be Grand Case.

Simpson Bay has a good run of restaurants close together, ten minutes from most Dutch-side hotels, and works well when you do not want a forty-minute drive either side of dinner.

Maho is closer still and busier, with the casinos next door for afterwards.

Marigot has excellent food around the harbour and is quieter in the evening than its daytime reputation suggests.

We will tell you which suits the night you are describing rather than send you to the famous one by default.

Late

The whole point is that the evening ends when it ends. There is no meter and no anxious glancing at the time, and the driver is still there at eleven or at one.

The metered alternative charges 25% more after ten on the Dutch side and 50% more after midnight on the French side — which is precisely when you would be leaving Grand Case. The full tariff is here.

What it costs

Per vehicle for the evening, waiting included, whatever the party size. Six people pay what two pay, which is where this becomes obviously cheaper than the alternative.

Questions people actually ask

How long is the drive to Grand Case?

About 35 minutes from the Dutch side — Simpson Bay, Maho, Cupecoy — and longer if the bridge catches you on the way. From Orient Bay it is 15 minutes, and from Marigot about 20.

Does the driver wait or go home?

Either, and it costs the same to you. For a single dinner most people have us wait. Tell us which when you book, because it makes a real difference to the driver's evening even though it does not change your price.

What time do kitchens stop in Grand Case?

Earlier than most visitors expect — the strip winds down around ten, though the bars go later. If you want to eat at half past nine it is worth us telling you which places will still be serving.

Do I need a reservation?

In season, yes, for the better places, and particularly at weekends. Cruise days do not affect Grand Case much because it is too far from the port for most passengers.
