Your Driver
Private Driver in St. Maarten
The same person, every day, who already knows your daughter needs the booster seat.
What you are actually buying
Not a car. A person who knows where you are staying, which beach is calm given today's wind, that the bridge is open at half past four, and that you said you wanted somewhere quiet on Thursday.
That knowledge accumulates over a few days and it is why the same driver matters. On day one you explain everything. By day three you say "the usual place" and it works.
How people usually use it
A day at a time. Four, six or eight hours, for an island day, a shopping run, or getting a group somewhere and back. See driver for a day.
For the whole stay. Three, five or seven days with the same driver, on call within agreed hours. This is the one that replaces a rental car. See driver for your stay.
Just the evenings. Dinner in Grand Case, a night out in Simpson Bay, and nobody has to be the designated driver. See nights out.
Attached to a villa. For groups in Terres Basses or the French side, where the alternative is two rental cars and a lot of coordinating. See villa driver.
Against renting a car
We are not going to pretend the answer is always us, so here it is plainly.
Rent if you are here for two weeks or more, staying somewhere remote, and you enjoy driving in a new place. The island is small, the main roads are fine, and the freedom is real.
Do not rent if your week is Grand Case dinners and beach days. Parking in Marigot on a market morning is genuinely unpleasant, the secondary roads are unlit at night, and someone in your group has to stay sober through every dinner on an island where the wine list is half the reason you came.
The full comparison, costed for a typical week, is on renting a car in St. Maarten.
What is included
Fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you book. Fuel, parking, waiting, child seats and cold water in the car. No hourly meter running while you finish your coffee.
Multi-day bookings are priced as a package rather than as separate days, because that is how they actually work.
Who drives
Named people you can read about on this site, not a dispatch number. Twenty-four hours before your first pickup you get your driver's name, the vehicle and its plate on WhatsApp, and that same thread stays open for the rest of your stay.
It is a small thing that turns out to matter more than anything else we do.
Questions people actually ask
Do I get the same driver every day?
That is the point of it, and it is what we plan for. There are two of us, so it is usually the same person by default rather than by arrangement. If someone is ill or a schedule genuinely will not work, we tell you in advance rather than sending a stranger and hoping you do not mind.
Is a private driver cheaper than renting a car?
Not always, and it depends on how much you drive. For a week based around Grand Case or Orient Bay with a few dinners and a couple of beach days, it is usually close — and the driver includes parking, insurance excess, and someone sober going home. For a long stay with a lot of independent exploring, a rental is cheaper.
Does the driver wait, or leave and come back?
Whichever suits. On a day hire they stay with you. For a dinner they can wait or go home and return — say which when you book, because it changes nothing for you but a great deal for them.
What hours?
Day blocks are four, six or eight hours. Evenings run late by arrangement, and the difference between a taxi and a driver is that the driver is still there at eleven.
